Shades of Meaning
When to use:
- build vocabulary and synonyms
- interact with text
- scaffolding with students who need extra support
- to help students find the "right" word when writing
How to use:
1. Teacher asks hardware store to donate old paint chips for the classroom or use the fillable.
2. Teacher explains that words and terms have "shades of meaning" that are similar but slightly different.
3. Teacher models the concept by using a concert example from temperature, light, or love. For example: devotion,
affection, love, ardor, fondness. Teacher may have class discussion and do one together
4. Teacher hands out paint chips or fillable. Students develop their own continuum of words. 5. Attach the paint chips/ fillable to a piece of notebook paper and have students write sentences with each of the terms
they came up with. Ask the students to write these sentences next to each block on the paint chip/ fillable.
6. Teacher explains that good writers understand the subtle difference between words like these and encourage them to
use these types of words in their writing.
