KWL Chart
When to use:
- to build background information
- scaffolding with students who need extra support
How to use:
1. Do as a group or individually.
2. Create chart on own paper or use fillable.
3. First think, then list, what you know about the topic before reading--put in the K column.
4. Ask questions about what you want to know about the topic and list in the W column --indicate order of importance of
listed questions.
5. Answer your questions and list new information learned in the L column--use a * to indicate main ideas; a ! for
surprising ideas learned; a ? for things/ ideas you are still unsure about.
