Vocabulary Frames
When to use:
- to highlight vocabulary words
- gain experience with key vocabulary words
- activate multiple modes of learning while working with vocabulary
How to use:
1. Teacher chooses vocabulary words from text/unit or student chooses words as they read.
2. Students create graphic on own their paper or use the fillable.
3. Student places the vocabulary word in the center of each "card". Optional: Students also add the part of speech under
the word.
4. Student places the definition in the upper left hand corner of the "card". Teacher can give students the definition or
have them find the definition on their own in the text glossary.
5. Student places 2 antonyms in the upper right hand corner of the "card". Optional Alternate: Place 2 synonyms in the
upper right hand corner of the "card".
6. Student writes a "show me" sentence in the lower left hand corner of the "card". This sentence needs to be a good, solid
solid that proves the student knows what the sentence means. For example," I am anguished." is not a good show
me sentence. However, "I am anguished over the loss of the Broncos last night because they are my favorite team."
is a good show me sentence.
7. Student draws a picture in the lower right hand corner to help them visualize the word and/or meaning.
